Der in Ecuador aufgewachsene Benjamin Appel (geb. 1978) absolvierte sein Studium an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe bei Daniel Roth und Thomas Zipp. In seinen Installationen setzt er Objektkonstruktionen und Malerei in Beziehung zum realen Raum und spielt mit dessen verschiedenen Repräsentationsmöglichkeiten. Appels geometrisch ausbalancierte, skulpturale Objekte und Rauminstallationen aus »armen« Materialien wie Beton, Erde und Holz sind nicht nur Bekenntnisse zum Unspektakulären und Fragilen, sondern zugleich Interaktionsräume, die Grundsätzliches aus dem Alltäglichen herausfiltern.
Der Katalog stellt Benjamin Appels Schaffen erstmals einem größeren Publikum vor.
Brought up in Ecuador, Benjamin Appel (b. 1978) studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe taught by Daniel Roth and Thomas Zipp. In his installations, he examines the relationship between object constructions and painting to real space. Appel’s geometrically balanced, sculptural objects and space installations made of "poor" materials such as concrete, earth and wood celebrate the unspectacular and the fragile, and as interaction spaces filter out the fundamental from the ordinary. The catalogue introduces Benjamin Appel's work to a wider audience for the first time. |
